About the instructor:

Denise was raised in Hampshire in the south east of England and holds a BA Degree in Acting from Middlesex University in London. She moved to Los Angeles with a Green Card in 2017 and then to Vancouver, WA in 2024. In her final year of university, she booked her first professional role playing Ophelia in a national tour of ‘Hamlet’ which began a successful career in UK theatre. Denise has performed on stages all over the British Isles, Europe, Canada and the US, including an Off- Broadway run. Screen roles followed and her latest role in ‘The Mural’ movie shoots in Portland this coming September. Also a successful audiobook narrator and voice actor in video games, animation, commercials, and audio plays, she currently voices the characters of Dr Ava Jansen in the video game franchise ‘Call of Duty’ and Illezra in ‘Black Desert’. In 2024 she was nominated for a One Voice Award and VOX Award for Best Video Game Performer. Denise was selected as a participant in BAFTA’s US Newcomers Talent Program from 2018- 2022, and is now a BAFTA Connect member. In her spare time, Denise enjoys singing oldies and holiday classics with local a cappella group ‘The HoneyBees’, exploring new places, and watching cartoons with her animator husband.

Join actress and voice coach Denise Hoey for a fun, accessible introduction to the foundations of Irish dialect work - focusing on clarity, consistency, and believable sound without slipping into caricature.

This class is designed as an introductory overview, helping actors understand how Irish dialects function and how to approach them responsibly in performance.

 

What You'll Learn:

  • Why there is no single “Irish accent” - and how dialects vary by region

  • An introduction to General Irish / Neutral Irish as a starting point for actors

  • Key sound features:

  • Vowel shifts

  • Consonant changes (especially T, TH, R, and L)

  • Rhoticity and placement

  • Irish rhythm, melody, and speech flow

  • Common mistakes actors make - and how to avoid sounding cartoonish

  • Guided practice with text and short performance exercises

 

You’ll leave with:

  • A clear understanding of how Irish dialects are structured

  • Foundational oral posture and sound patterns to build from

  • Practice scripts and custom Irish dialect notes

  • Personalized feedback during group work

  • Tools and resources for continued study beyond the class
