From Audition to Opportunity: Build an Expert Workflow
Animation & Video Game Voice Over Workshop
"As voice actors, we spend 98% of our time doing the business of doing business; tracking down the opportunities, doing the auditions, and sending in the MP3s. But the 2% of the time we actually get to play and have fun? That's why I do it."
— Richard Horvitz
The day-to-day job of a voice actor is auditioning for roles you may never book. As a full-time voice actor making $50k - $100k a year, you can expect to book 1 out of 50 auditions you submit. That's only 2%. How do you do that without losing confidence, but gaining it? Simple. You recognize that the real work IS THE AUDITION: the rhythm and discipline of preparing, recording, editing, and sending. That consistency is what builds a true professional.
Your skills are sharpened in warm-ups, where you train fundamentals and target weaknesses. What's uncomfortable? What are you avoiding/struggling with? That’s what you train. Your creativity and curiosity come alive in auditions, where discovery shapes character. What happens if you try something unexpected? Your professionalism is communicated through kind, clear, and concise emails. And your growth and maturity comes from letting go, which means finishing the audition, sending it, and moving on.
This process creates consistency, confidence, and readiness, so when the big opportunity comes, you’re relaxed, practiced and prepared.
To do that, you have to audition. Consistently. That means every day. 5–10 auditions a day, 1–2 hours total, 10 minutes per audition: 5 minutes recording, 5 minutes editing. Is that enough time? It has to be. How do we manage that? Practice, patience, and most importantly, PERSPECTIVE.
In this class, we’ll reframe the audition as the job itself. You’ll develop the habits, skills, and mindset that lead to a sustainable, grounded, and fulfilling career, where booking is a bonus, not the goal.
We’ll cover:
Introduction/Lecture (30–50 minutes)
1. Auditioning and recording from home (home studio + where to submit)
2. Warm-ups and technique (vocal work, character building, health & maintenance)
3. Recording auditions and the Rule of 3 (training for real sessions)
4. Editing Your Auditions (technical skills, do’s and don’ts, decision/taste making)
5. Emails and portfolio (clear, authentic communication)
6. Process over results (building consistency, confidence, and longevity)
5–10 Minute Break
Audition Practice (40 minutes – 1 hour 40 minutes)
Each student will have 10 minutes to audition, using either a provided script or one they bring. What happens under time pressure? What choices do you make when it counts? You’ll receive live direction, watch the editing process, and hear the final playback. The instructor will then break down strengths and areas for growth, offering clear, actionable feedback.
Q&A (Remaining Time)
Students are free to ask any question they have written down during class or asked on the spot. Not sure what to ask? Start with what’s confusing, frustrating, or unclear. The instructor invites all questions about the business, class topics, his career, or specific challenges you’re facing, and will answer to the best of his ability. Curiosity is one of the key skills we're trying to foster, so please don't hesitate to ask.
